Bjorn's 86 Gives European Open to Ferrie

STRAFFAN, Ireland

Kenneth Ferrie shot a 2-under 70 Sunday for a two-stroke victory at the European Open, taking advantage when overnight leader Thomas Bjorn carded a 14-over 86.

Ferrie, who posted his third straight round of 70, finished at 3 under for the tournament. Colin Montgomerie, after a final round of 69, and Graeme Storm, with a 73, shared second place. Darren Clarke and Peter Hanson shared fourth place, three behind the winner.

U.S. Open champion Michael Campbell had a disappointing final day, shooting 75 for a share of 25th at 4 over.

"Never in my wildest dreams did I think a 70 would be good enough," said Ferrie, whose only previous victory was in the 2003 Spanish Open. "I didn't believe I had won until I saw it on TV in the clubhouse."

Bjorn, who had a four-stroke lead going into the final day, collapsed and ended up in a tie for 33rd at 6 over. He shot an 11 at the par-4 17th hole, where he hit three tee shots into the water.

The 34-year-old Dane took 28 strokes to play the last four holes, or 10 over for those four holes.

"That was the worst day of my golfing life," Bjorn said. "It was a tough day."

Montgomerie missed his chance on the last two holes _ he bogeyed 17 and then failed to birdie the par-5 18th, when he missed a 4-foot putt. He got off to a strong start with four birdies in his first five holes, and two more at the ninth and 10th. But he double-bogeyed the seventh, and that proved to be costly.

"I got off to a flying start. I needed some momentum and I got it," Montgomerie said. "But the closing holes are very difficult."

Storm, a former British amateur champion, earned a place in the British Open in two weeks as the highest finisher not already guaranteed a place.

Campbell said he learned a lot despite his performance.

"What I take away from this is how hard it is to try and back it up after a major win," Campbell said. "I learned a lot, really. It's good to have actually played this week and I look forward to the British Open."
