Alan Morin maintained his lead after Friday's second round at the PGA Club Professional Championship despite bogeying three of his last five holes to finish with a 4-over 76.
Morin, from Lake Worth, Fla., shared the lead with Travis Long, an assistant from Henderson, Nev., who shot a 3-over 75 to also end the round at even par.
Winds gusting over 20 mph made play rough at the Ocean Course. Just two players managed par, and Friday's average score was 79.065, shattering the previous one-round tournament record of 78.00 set in 1981 at PGA National.
Morin and Long are one shot ahead of Jim Sobb of Barrington, Ill., who shot 74 to finish at 1-over.
Five golfers finished at 2-over, including first round co-leader Mark Mielke, of East Norwich, N.Y.
Suzy Whaley, who became the first female PGA professional to earn a spot in the Club Pro Championship in 2002 and in 2003 the first in 58 years to qualify for a PGA Tour event a year later, finished at 8-over to make the cut by two strokes.
The top 25 finishers earn spots in the PGA Championship, which will be played at Baltusrol in Springfield, N.J., in August.
Morin said Friday's round was one the toughest he has played.
"The wind was blowing 20 to 25 mph, so it was hard to pick a club. It was hard to make a decision," said Morin, who struggled with his putting so much he said he should be 3-under.
Kiawah Island's wildlife also gave Morin problems. His approach on No. 10 went into some dunes, and he had to get a ruling about fire ants. Then as he approached the green, a snake slithered across his path and into the sand.
"There was also a pretty big alligator on 12," Morin said.
Tee times for Saturday have been moved up because of expected bad weather and groups will start on both the front and back nine. The leaders will tee off at 9:30 a.m. EDT.
