  • Tiger Woods pull-hooked his iron off the tee into the infamous Barry Burn. That's not unusual at Carnoustie, except the winding stream normally doesn't come into play until the final hole, not the 1st.

Tiger Splashes to 74, Now 7 Back

Garcia Still -6, 2 Up on KJ

With a "safe" iron in his hand, Tiger Woods inexplicably pulled his opening shot of the 2nd round into the Barry Burn. The two-time defending Open champ struggled with Carnoustie all day, carding a 3-over-par 74 that left a seven-shot gap between him and leader Sergio Garcia, who followed his opening 65 with a grinding even-par 71.

Phil Mickelson's European frustration continued, missing the cut after an "ugly" 77, including a double-bogey at the last when par might have kept him around for the weekend.

South Korean native KJ Choi made a run at Garcia with a 69. Canadian Mike Weir shot a 68, the best round of the day, and was tied for third at 139 with Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez.

Garcia began the day by nearly taking out the crowd around the first green. "Shanked it," Sergio admitted. Damon Hack reports at iht.com ...

    LIP-OUTS
"I know for a fact that there are golfers, whether it's HGH [human growth hormone], creatine or steroids, that are doing drugs. I would say of golfers around the world playing on tour there's 10 guys taking something ... definitely not going to be lower, but might be a hell of a lot more. And I'm delighted to see that they're going to start having tests at random. It's absolutely essential we do that. We are dreaming if we think it's not going to come into golf."
    -- Gary Player

  • Seve Says, 'Adios'

Was there ever a more exciting golfer to watch than Seve Ballesteros? Even Arnie's Army had to admit that the Spaniard's swashbuckling style was more bold and daring than even the King.

Now, after losing his game a decade ago, the broadly smiling man who dominated European golf in his prime is hanging up his spikes.

Off the course, Seve's marriage failed, and last week he was rushed to the hospital in emergency circumstances, though Ballesteros denies it was a suicide attempt.

Graham Spiers relates the tragic end at timesonline.co.uk ......

  • The affable, slow-talking RW Eaks was told to quit the game after the only golf lesson he ever took. After 90 tries in six years on the Champions Tour, he made it to the winner's circle.

RW Eaks Gets 1st Win at Little Tournament That Could

After a 30-year run, the PGA Tour dumped the BC Open from its revamped FedExCup-driven schedule, but the small town tournament ended up where it probably should have been 10 or 15 years ago -- on the Champions Tour. The event has survived more than one flood, a clubhouse fire, and the lack of a major sponsor, yet still managed to scrape together the millions each year required to host the mostly non-marquee players who showed up to enjoy the community's legendary hospitality.

Reborn as the Dick's Sporting Goods Open, sponsored by the national chain which had its start in the upstate New York valley, this inaugural edition on the senior circuit was won, appropriately, by RW Eaks.

After being close so many times, Eaks finally earned his first Champions Tour victory on Sunday afternoon when he shot a final-round 6-under-par 66 at En-Joie Golf Club.

Eaks used big tee shots to his advantage. He played En-Joie's four par-5s at 8-under for the tournament-- including two eagles. Charlie Jaworski reports at pressconnects.com ...

  • KJ's philosophy: "Don't look back, just move forward just like a tank."
  • Choi Wins Tiger's new Tournament

Just seven years ago, Choi was the first PGA Tour rookie to come out of Korea. As recently as the start of 2002, Choi was 191st in the world rankings. Now he's No. 13 and rising as one of five players to win multiple events this season.

In the space of five weeks, the Houston resident won Jack's Memorial and then Tiger's AT&T.

Choi credits improved putting to an oversized, flat-sided, Super Stroke putting grip. "It reduces the movement of your wrist, and you just use your shoulders and it just makes the ball roll better and it gives me confidence."

Choi lives up to his "Tank" nickname, says Steve Campbell at chron.com ...

American Outgrinds Ochoa to Win US Open

Cristie Kerr of Miami, the all-American girl with an all-American smile and a golf game to boot, stepped out of the Carolina pines and into the spotlight by winning the all-American tournament on the week of July 4.

And she did it wearing a red shirt, a blue skirt and a white hat that gave her the look of a walking, talking American flag.

Kerr stirred national pride by outdueling the world’s No. 1 player, Mexico’s Lorena Ochoa, to win her country’s national championship and first major title -- Brett Friedlander describes Christie's game-face at fayobserver.com ...

Are You Buying on Monday What Tiger Wears On Sunday?

Doug Reed, the director of apparel at Nike Golf, can tell you today what shirts Woods will be wearing at the 2008 US Open. That's because Nike scripts every outfit Woods will wear at golf's major championships and it does so at least a year ahead of time.

Because it's been such a success for Nike, other major golf apparel manufacturers have gotten into the act — scripting players such as Sergio Garcia, Zach Johnson, Justin Rose, Paula Creamer and Natalie Gulbis.

Sergio wants a lot of color in the clothing they script for him, according to Bob Buttitta at venturacountystar.com ...

Cabrera is the Least Over Par, Takes Trophy to Argentina -- Tiger and Furyk Fall One Shot Short

A three-horse race featuring two of the best in the world ended with a portly, 37-year-old Argentine known as "The Duck" waddling away with the trophy.

Chain-smoking to calm his nerves amid the presence of Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk, Angel Cabrera navigated a treacherous Oakmont Country Club course in 1-under-par 69 yesterday to win the U.S. Open championship, his first win on American soil in 18 years as a professional golfer.
